The world as we knew it has changed. As communities practice social distancing to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, many people are beginning to feel a sense of deep loss, sadness, loneliness, and fear of the unknown. Technology can help us stay virtually connected to family, friends, and coworkers, but how do we manage this scale of personal uncertainty and collective grief?

For answers and insights, our colleagues at Harvard Business Review turned to David Kessler, one of the world’s foremost experts on grief and author of the new book, Finding Meaning: The Sixth Stage of Grief.

Understanding the stages of grief, he says, is the key to moving forward. First there’s denial: “This virus won’t affect me.” Then anger: “You’re making me stay home.” Next, bargaining: “If I social distance for two weeks, everything will be better.” Followed by sadness: “I don’t know when this will end.” And finally, acceptance: “This is happening. I have to figure out how to proceed.”

We know that this crisis is collective—and so is the solution. That’s why we’d like to share this article with you: “That Discomfort You’re Feeling Is Grief.” In it, Kessler not only talks about how we navigate grief, but proposes a sixth stage: finding meaning. We hope that this piece brings you some comfort.
